Electrical Updates Beginners Can Make to Their Home
Now, this seems like a task that you should definitely hire a professional to manage for you. But it’s actually very simple and straight forward. We share step by step instructions of how any beginner can swap out both a light switch and a receptacle.
Updating Light Switch and Receptacle
Hink: These are the steps Greg instructed me from another room while I did the work! I did it, so can you!
Updating Light Fixtures
Again, something very intimidating until you realize there isn’t much to this process at all. You might want a little help depending on how heavy the light fixture is, but totally doable!

Fun Reading Corner Beginners Can Make for Their Home
A reading nook does not have to include a built-in feature as ours does. By using simple supplies like 2x4s and plywood you can create a beautiful reading nook. This is what ours used to look like because we added the bookshelf. This is a beginner project that makes a big impact and a cozy spot for the family to snuggle down with a good book.
updates beginners can make to their home with floating shelves
I almost forgot to add this project to the list of updates beginners can make to their home. This building project is a great project for someone just starting off. There isn’t much to it but it adds so much character to any space!
Install Custom Curtain Rods
We opted to build our own curtain rods twice in our home. These iron curtain rods were built out of the need for a three-panel door. This door isn’t even pictured because of how large it is. We needed a curtain rod longer than any rod we could find, so we made our own!
In the girls’ room, we chose to build wooden curtain rods to tie in some of the wood elements in their room. Not to mention the cost saving of these curtain rods, there was no question this would be another DIY project.

When we finished, or should I say thought we finished this space I kept walking by knowing something was missing. This little accent wall has just made this space for me! Not to mention it is so very functional as well.
Bench Cushion for Beginners
Along with our basement entryway renovation, we also built this little bench. As you can see from the photo, it’s not up against a flat wall. This is why we had to come up with our own bunch cushion. This is the perfect beginner’s project as it does not involve any sewing!
Shiplap Wall Treatment for Beginners
Forget the professionals on this project too! This project is so simple you are going to want to shiplap your whole house, and maybe your neighbours too!
