I WAS CRAVING SOME VISUAL SIMPLICITY IN OUR HOME, AND OUR WALKTHROUGH DINING ROOM WAS THE PLACE TO MAKE A CHANGE.
Our dining room is situated in the center of our home. You can see the dining room from the front door as well as from the back of the house. One day I should draw out the layout for our home, I think it's considered a side split?
As we began to renovate other areas of our home, I came to realize how important the design of this little space is. It needs to be a space that can complement all other spaces in our home.
Walkthrough Dining Room Before
About a year and a half ago I wallpapered the dining room hoping it would define this open-concept space. I learned a good lesson in patience here.
The wallpaper I was after was out of my budget at the time, so while in one of the hardware stores in London I found this one. It was much more reasonably priced, and I didn't hate it per se. So I bought it.
As Greg and I were applying the wallpaper I was telling myself to love it, but I knew I didn't. I had my heart set on a different pattern and I should have waited and saved up for it.
In the end, it was a temporary fix, and a 'better than before' to our current situation, and I don't regret it. I am learning though, to save up, wait a little longer and do what I am actually dreaming of.
Walkthrough Dining Room Update
I know now that what bothered me most about this space was not the walls but the light! After 3.5 years of living here I finally found the perfect light!
The lesson I have learned in all of this is that 'better than before' is a great motto to follow because it gets you excited about your home, and it allows you to love the space you are living in. But also, if you can't find what you are envisioning in your head, wait. Save all your pennies, and wait.
I saved for a light fixture that I guessed would be hundreds of dollars because most decorative fixtures are. And then I spotted this one, and I knew it was perfect. Able to blend into our colour theme and at the same time brought in the style factor I was hoping for.
So this dining space went, no surprise, white. Because my eyes have been craving simple, filled with texture. And now our walkthrough dining room flows with the rest of our space.
Future Dreams for the Dining Room
Down the road, we still have plans to get a new dining room table, one that is a little longer. The dining room table we have now was one my aunt found, and my mom bought for $25 at the grocery store. We have had it for 11 years now, and it's done great.
We are hoping, because we have the space to possibly build a custom length table that will fit all our extended family. Maybe not comfortably fit, but fit all the adults at least.
As for chairs, we have gone through our fair share of them. We actually have a great story of how we purchased our first set of dining room chairs, maybe I'll share that story in on Instagram stories. Our current ones were free, given to us by my dad's friend. They are solid and work great.
I am a dreamer, so I gathered together some of my finds for dining tables and chairs I am dreaming of. Hopefully, it will give you some inspiration if you are looking to update your dining room.
I love to look and plan, even if I am not in the market to buy right now, it gives me direction and ideas for when I see something similar at a second-hand store.

Thanks for reminding me to be content to wait and save up for something really special! Love the change and it looks so much more calm with the simple white!

That's the hardest part, to wait and save up, but it's always worth it in the end.
