After saving our spare change for just over a year it was finally time to purchase a new mattress. It was never our intent to purchase a mattress in a box but with not being able to enter stores we finally pulled the trigger. Here is our honest Hamuq mattress review.
What made you pick Hamuq?
Once we made our decision to purchase online it was time to narrow down a company. Greg and I were both unwilling to switch completely over to a foam mattress, this narrowed down our choices quite a bit. We also wanted to stay local and purchase from a Canadian company, this is how we came across Hamuq.
Where is Hamuq made?
Hamuq is a Canadian based company in Toronto, Ontario. Hamuq sells hybrid mattresses, offers a 101-night free trial, has fast delivery, a 15-year warranty and is fully made in Canada.
This company prides itself in using only Canadian made products, nothing is shipped in or manufactured outside of the country.
Honest Hamuq Review
I will be totally honest when I say, we didn't love the Hamuq mattress right away, in fact, we almost returned it.
Our first impression of the Hamuq was actually amazing considering it only took two days for it to arrive at our door. Unfortunately, we didn't love the actual mattress for the first month, it was just too hard.
*Spoiler alert, we did keep the mattress.
The first two weeks of sleeping on the mattress did not go well for us. Greg and I are both side and back sleepers. After the first two weeks, I was ready to return the mattress.
I would wake up a few times a night to roll over to the other side because my shoulder would be sore. Just to wake a few hours later to another sore shoulder.
After about a month we were starting to get used to the mattress. It was a little difficult to fall asleep but once we did we didn't wake up until morning. Both mine and Greg's back pain was gone. Our actual sleep had greatly improved.
I started to enjoy the mattress when on my back, but because I fall asleep on my side I still wasn't 100% sold.
Greg and I agreed that there was really nothing wrong with the mattress. Given the opportunity to have a free trial with an option for return really made us hold this bed to high standards.
I contacted Hamuq a month into our trial saying that the mattress was not horrible, it just wasn't working perfectly for us.
Hamuq's customer service was great and asked if we wanted to try a mattress topper before making our final decision. I hadn't even thought of the idea but agreed.
The mattress topper arrived two days later. Amazing shipping once again.
After two months with the Hamuq mattress, we are sold. I am not even sure if it was the mattress topper that did the trick for us. Greg and I were sleeping on an 11-year-old mattress that was very soft and saggy. Although it was easy to fall asleep on, it was horrible for our backs.
What sold us on the Hamuq was the good night's sleep we got from it. Both Greg and I have amazing night sleeps now. I have yet to wake in the night for the last month (apart from being woken by a child of course).
Every morning, I now wake without back or neck pain, feeling well-rested. We will be keeping our Hamuq mattress and are thankful for the good night's rest we have gotten from it.
I am sincere when I say every morning I wake up surprised that it's the first time I've woken since falling asleep.
*UPDATE: It's been 10 months and we are still very happy with our Hamuq mattress. We are so pleased with it we decided to purchase one for our RV as well.
What is a hybrid bed?
A hybrid bed is a mattress made by more then one material.
The Hamuq mattress is layered with a soft cover that is hypo-allergenic; followed by a breathable memory foam; a gel-infused memory foam and finally Candian Steel pocket coils.
The mattress also comes with a supportive perimeter for edge support to prevent the corners of your bed from sagging over time.
How much does a Hamuq mattress cost?
The mattress ranges in price from $799- $1,099. Having said that, for the past several months all their products have been $100 off, so look for a sale before you purchase.
Size | Cost | Dimensions | Weight |
Twin | $799 | 39 x 75 x 12 | 55 lbs |
Twin XL | $829 | 39 x 80 x 12 | 60 lbs |
Ful | $849 | 54 x 75 x 12 | 77 lbs |
Queen | $949 | 60 x 80 x 12 | 89 lbs |
King | $1,099 | 76 x 80 x 12 | 106 lbs |
If you are curious about the dimensions of each bed and its weight I have included that information here as well. I did have to go looking in the FAQ section for this information when on the website.
Other Commonly Asked Questions?
Here are some questions we had when searching for the right mattress. I thought I would include some of them here in case you were wondering the same.
What type of sleeper is the Hamuq mattress good for?
Hamuq states that their mattress is good for all types of sleepers. The mattress is rated at a medium firmness. The website also mentions that the mattress may soften over time while still remaining in its original shape.
Greg enjoys the mattress firmness for side and back sleeping as well and the occasional stomach snooze. I love this mattress for back sleeping and have to say that it was an adjustment for me for side sleeping. Having said that I do enjoy it now after the first two months.
Can I sleep on the mattress right away?
Yes! Once you unbox the mattress there is a plastic cover that needs to be taken off. As soon as the plastic is removed the mattress pops right into shape and can be slept on that same night.
We found there was a small adjustment period needed to get used to a new mattress.
We recommend at least 2 weeks, but you are given 101 nights free trial so I would give it some time before you make your final decision.
Like we said it took us a good month to really adjust to our new bed.
Do you find shipping was easy to track/ accurate?
Hamuq's shipping is easy and accurate. Our mattress was delivered right to our door two days after ordering. I was shocked at how quickly shipping times were.
We ordered a king mattress which was delivered right to the front door, because it is delivered by a third party the mattress is not brought indoors. Thankfully we live in a bungalow so getting it indoors was no too bad.
I would recommend a second person for carrying the mattress indoors as it is quite heavy, ranging between 55-106 lbs.
Does Hamuq have mattress toppers?
Hamuq does provide a mattress topper offering just a little bit of added comfort.
The toppers ship in the same great 2-day shipping. The topper is essentially an additional piece of 2-inch foam covered in a protective material that can be removed for washing.
Can I return a Hamuq mattess?
Yes, you can in fact return a Hamuq mattress. If you are not satisfied with your mattress and it's within the 101-night free trial just contact customer service. As I understand you will need to provide a few photos before the return goes through.
Returned items are then donated to a local charity to you (how cool is that) and you are refunded your full amount upon pick-up.
I hope you found our mattress in a box review helpful. I understand purchasing a mattress is different for everyone.
This is our experience with the Hamuq mattress and although we can say we recommend it I would do your own trial. Use the time given to you to try the mattress for yourself. We were nervous about trying a bed in a box but the trial period takes all the worry away.
If you know us, a new mattress also means a master bedroom makeover, so stay tuned for that in the next coming months!
